The Seasons
The Seasons is my colourful ode to the beautiful diversity of nature and the inevitable changes that arise within the cosmos. The series evolved around a contrasting period in my life: from the overwhelming abundance of nature, adventure, and global encounters in South Africa, to the sudden stillness of the Covid-19 pandemic spent with my parents in the Frisian countryside.
These two worlds intertwined throughout the series, mirroring the distinct atmosphere of each season. In the tapestries, I brought together flora and fauna from South Africa and Fryslân, while also incorporating hundreds of photographs taken by people from around the world. By connecting fragments of different lives, places, and moments, the tapestries create a sense of togetherness during a time I felt far removed from the world.
The Seasons is a reminder that the natural rhythms of movement and stillness, exposure and retreat, create the same continuous cycle—and that even in moments of solitude, we remain connected to the people, places, and experiences that shape us.

About the making process: from digital to tactile
For The Seasons, I selected around 100 images per artwork and then cut out, recoloured, adjusted, and merged elements from these images to create the bursting composition. I then translated the complex, multilayered digital artwork into Jacquard fabric by implementing various weaving techniques, while taking into consideration that the weaving method is built up from only eight colours. The yarns are made from NewLife® polyester, and the Jacquard is produced within a sustainable textile production process. For the optional version, I added further 3D effects and a touch of sparkle through hand embroidery and beading.
